TitleHammick, Dalziel Llewellyn: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his work on physical and physical-organic chemistry. Early researches included surface tension-latent heat relationships, rates of halogenation, parachor measurements, and studies on liquid and plastic sulphur. In organic chemistry he has investigated the photo-decomposition of nitroso-compounds, complex formation between aromatic nitro-compounds and hydrocarbons, the mechanism of decarboxylation, the 'Hammick reaction' of alpha-imino carboxylic acids with carbonyl compounds, the mechanism of the benzidine and semidine transformations, methylations with dimethyl ether, and the relation of antibiotic to physical properties of the acridine anti-malarials, including the optical resolution of mepacrine. He has also discovered a new type of mesoionic compounds.
