TitleHawkes, Leonard: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationDistinguished for repeated field research on Iceland's igneous geology combined with petrology. Specially important are descriptions of gabbro and granophyre intrusions, southe-east Iceland, with roofs and walls undisturbed (1928), and of granophyre Sandfell, with roof strongly domed (1933). His maps, sections and magnificent photographs are convincing. His handling of world-wide literature is exemplary, see for instance discussion of glacier flow (1930). His argument for post-consolidation change of composition in a marginal glass of unaltered appearance is a model of geology combined with chemistry (1932). Other topics: tectonic and superficial problems, Iceland; and plant-borne erratics in Cretaceous England. List of papers attached.
