Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Dr E F. Gale. Distinguished for discoveries concerning the metabolism of bacteria. His comprehensive study of conditions governing bacterial decarboxylation led to the recognition of pyridoxal phosphate as the prosthetic group of certain amino-acid decarboxylases. With these decarboxylases as analytical tools Gale investigated amino-acid assimilation by growing bacteria and its relationship to protein and nucleic acid metabolism. His study of the action of penicillin and of other substances on such processes has revealed important influences on these chemotherapeutic agents on cell metabolism. Gale's distinction is internationally recognised and he was Herter Lecturer at Johns Hopkins University in 1948. |
