TitleInglis, Sir Claude Cavendish: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished as a pioneer worker in the application of large scale models to the solution of hydraulic problems in India.
From 1916 when he initiated irrigation research, he carried out extensive work on irrigation and land drainage problems with the aid of large scale field and model investigations which led to the solution of many difficulties that had arisen in the irrigated tracts of the Bombay Deccan due to waterlogging, salt efflorescence and mal-distribution of supplies.
In 1919 he opened the first large experimental station for hydraulic model work in India, where questions affecting the design and remodelling of canals in Sind and the Deccan were dealt with, but ultimately when the Indian Waterways Experiment Station was taken over by the Government of India, engineering problems of much wider scope than those associated with irrigation were tackled, including the positioning and protection of railway bridges and the control of rivers in all parts of India.
