TitleCherry, Sir Thomas MacFarland: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to the theories of the dynamics of gases and of the solutions of differential equations fundamental in celestial mechanics. His work on the motion of gases at speeds near the speed of sound, subsonic in part and supersonic in part, both past obstacles and in nozzles, is of outstanding importance. Has made many contributions to our knowledge of the series satisfying the differential equations of dynamics, and fundamental in celestial mechanics, establishing theorems regarding their convergence, investigating the topological properties of the trajectories, and throwing much light on the occurrence and connexion of periodic solutions.
