TitleCox, Sir Ernest Gordon: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to sterochemical probelmes by X-ray crystallographic methods, in the diverse fields of carbohydrates and inorganic co-ordination compounds. His early and accurate studies on pentaerythritol and glucosamine were notable examples, while his work on vitamin C contributed substantially to the elucidation of the structure of that substance. At the same time his work on a series of compounds with various metals did much to change the outlook on inorganic stereochemistry. More recently he has been concerned with the accurate study of bond distances of theoretical interest, and has initiated much important work in this field.
