CitationResearch Fellow in Zoology, University of Bristol. Scientific Director, Zoological Society of London (elect; to take up post in 1951). His published work comprises: -
1. many important memoirs on the physiology of reproduction in marine & terrestrial mammals, birds & fishes; 2. papers on oceanography & marine biology; 3. papers on ecological subjects & the biology of particular forms (e.g. on Elephant Seals, Birds of South Georgia, hyaena of Africa, stomach oil and petrels); 4. anatomical & systematic papers dealing with copepods & other invertebrates, marsupials, seals, rats, hyaena & Basking Shark. His contributions thus cover a wide field; they are distinguished throughout by their originality and beauty of presentation. Author of excellent handbook on South Georgia (1931). From 1940 to 1945 engaged on Radar Research & Development at Malvern. He has been particularly successful in planning & carrying out field expeditions (e.g. East African Mammals, Basking Sharks, Seal lactation) to obtain material for further laboratory work.
