CitationPh.D.; D.Sc. (Leeds), F.Inst.P - Distinguished for his researches on the organisation of the plant cell wall, chiefly by polarisation optics, X-ray analysis, and electron microscopy. Has established quantitatively how the structure of a secondary wall is a function of cell dimensions; has contributed greatly to our knowledge of the 'crossed fibrillar' type of structure first announced in Valonia; was the first to observe in the electron microscope the occurrence of cellulose as uniform microfibrils; and has carried out an X-ray study of 70 species of algae. Has also done work on the water relations of plants. A list of 60 publications is attached.
