CitationDistinguished as a biochemist and particularly for his work on the structure of insulin. His discovery of the use of 1 : 2 : 4 - fluorodinitrobenzene for characterising the N - terminal residue of a peptide chain was a major advance which has found wide application. His work on insulin, in which he has demonstrated the complete amino-acid sequence in the phenylalanyl and glycyl chains, is a remarkable achievement which has shed much new light on the structure of this protein and probably of proteins in general. It has also enriched our knowledge of the specificity of the protolytic enzymes.
