TitleBaker, John Fleetwood, Baron Baker of Windrush, Gloucestershire: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationDistinguished for experimental and theoretical investigations into (a) the elastic and (b) the plastic behaviour of steel structures. (a) included the first successful investigations of the stress distribution in existing building structures and culminated in the derivation of a rational method of designing multi-storey frames. (b) resulted in derivation of a successful method of designing single storey structures and a better understanding of the behaviour of continuous structures. The technique developed (a) has been used to determine the forces and stresses in ships in service and to elucidate the causes of fractures in welded ships.
