Is a leading authority on blood coagulations. He discovered the coagulant action of Russell's viper venom on haemophilic blood and recognised the complex system producing thromboplastin in shed blood, and the missing factor in Christmas disease. He was responsible, in collaboration, for the development of the Medical Research Council grey-wedge photometer and for the invention and construction of a practical electronic blood cell counter. He has made substantial contributions to the understanding of the action of C. welchii toxin, which throw light on the nature of the red cell membrane.
