CitationDistinguished for experimental investigations of nuclear reactions among the lighter elements and particularly for the discovery and study of excited states from which the alpha-particles are emitted.
His skill as an actual experimenter is enhanced on the one side by his technical ability with nuclear particle accelerators, which has been of much benefit to the laboratories where he has worked; on the other side, by his excellent graspmof theoretical principles.
