CitationDistinguished for his work on structures of inorganic compounds and alloys, investigations of defect lattices in ternary alloys, cobalt, graphite, and computational methods of X-ray analysis. Has extensively developed optical methods for observation of X-ray diffraction patterns of imperfect structures, ordering processes in alloys, Fourier transforms of molecules and of symmetry patterns, and Fourier synthesis of observed diffraction effects. Has built up the Physics Department in Manchester College f Technology to Special Degree standard (from intermediate) and assembled an active research team. Joint author of two important text-books (one in press). List of 86 publications since 1932 appended.
