DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationWith Stoner, made a systematic experimental investigation of the variation of absorption of x-rays with wave-length and atomic number. Established the fundamental processes in ionisation of gases by x-rays. Measured the angular distribution of photo electrons ejected by x-rays and showed that it was in accordance with the quantum theory of the effect.
Since the war has established an important school of Nuclear Physics. He has equipped his laboratory for particle acceleration and has measured the angular distribution of alpha-particles from nuclear reactions.
During the war, developed the production of centimetre valves and radar in Australia and was in succession Deputy Chief and Acting Chief of Radiophysics Laboratory. Since the war has been Chairman of the Australian Defence Research and Development Policy Committee.
