TitleSmith, Ernest Lester: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for his work on the chemistry and biochemistry of vitamins. In early studies he turned his attention to the chemical assay of vitamins A and D and to the investigation of factors affecting their stability. His work on vitamins was interrupted by research on penicillin during the war, but on its resumption it led him to the isolation of the anti-pernicious anaemia factor, vitamin B12 (cobalmin). This isolation was followed by the recognition of the presence of cobalt in the active compound and has been succeeded by important contributions to the chemistry and biochemistry of the substance. The work on vitamin B12, carried out independently of and simultaneously with that of a team in the United States, is a major scientific achievement of great importance to biochemistry and medicine.
