CitationDistinguished for important and extensive contributions to the mathematical theory of stress distributions in various types of isotropic and aeolotropic plates, and of the equilibrium and elastic stability of thin twisted strips and corrugated plates. Has made a complete and considerably simplified re-statement of the elastic equations for finite displacements in tensor notation. In hydrodynamics, has made additions to knowledge in connexion with the formation of eddies, the gliding of a plate on a stream, and to aerofoil theory. Is joint-author with W. Zerna of a standard treatise on Theoretical Elasticity (Clarendon Press).
