TitleHaddow, Sir Alexander: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to the experimental investigation of pathological growth and the chemotherapy of cancer. Commencing with the demonstration that carcinogenic substances inhibit the growth of normal and malignant cells he has carried out systematic experimental investigations of the biological effects of numerous classes of compounds (aminostilbenes, haloalkylamines, epoxides and alkysulphonoxalkanes) on normal and tumour bearing animals. This work has resulted in the discovery of a number of useful chemo-therapeutic agents and the recent demonstration of the tumour inhibiting effect of 2-choroethylmethane sulphonate. Other contributions include the induction of coat colour by alloxazine pigments and renal hypertrophy by pteridines. In addition, he has stimulated much fundamental research in the Institute which he directs.
