TitleHuggett, Arthur St George Joseph McCarthy: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished as a physiologist for studies, pursued for 25 years, in the physiology of reproduction. In the investigations which he has made either alone or as leader of a team, into the physiology and nutrition of the foetus and of the pregnant mother, he has especially studied the blood flow through the placenta, and the transport of oxygen and nutritive materials from mother to foetus; he showed that fructose is present in the foetal blood of the sheep, and that it is manufactured in the placenta from glucose, glycogen of the placenta being a stable storage form of carbohydrate.
