TitleClapham, Arthur Roy: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for his exceptionally broad scientific attainments, excellent critical judgement and incisive advances in plant taxonomy and ecology. His earlier work advanced the use of statistical methods in crop-investigation and analysis of vegetational structure. His "Check-list of British Vascular Plants" (1946) was an indispensable basis for the immensely valuable new "Flora of the British Isles" (Cambridge, 1952) of which he was part-author and of which he has now completed an abridged version. The wide and penetrating scientific knowledge he brought to these and to numerous studies of the taxonomy and ecology of British plants are altogether outstanding.
