CitationDistinguished for his work on the movement of ions in nerve and muscle and on the origin of the discharge in electric fish. Keynes developed methods for following the movements of radioactive ions in single nerve fibres and measured, directly, the quantities of sodium and potassium which cross the surface membrane during an impulse. He has subsequently investigated the way in which cells move ions against concentration differences. Using electric eels, he showed that the essential feature which allows large voltages to be generated is that the potential difference across one surface of an electroplate reverses during the discharge while that across the other remains practically inconstant.
