TitlePrice, William Charles: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for important contributions to chemical physics, particularly spectroscopy.
His research on the investigation of the spectra of polyatomic molecules in the vacuum ultraviolet was the pioneering work in the field and it has been of fundamental importance in putting on a precise foundation our knowledge of the electronic structure of such molecules.
In infra-red spectroscopy outstanding achievements have been the experimental proof of the bridge structure of diborane, the investigation of infra-red reflection spectra from molecular crystals, the emission spectra of molecules and radicals and the interpretation of the spectrum of the peptide link. Other important papers are on absorption and ionisation in the upper atmosphere. In the development of spectroscopic equipment he has shown a very high degree of experimental skill.
