CitationDuke-Elder has been the outstanding figure in ophthalmology for the last 20 years. By his efforts a field that was languishing is now flourishing and attracting an increasing number of able recruits, and the Institute of Ophthalmology, of which he is Director, has become the centre for ophthalmic medicine, pathology and applied physiology. He has personally made numerous researches on ocular circulation, the secretion of aqueous fluid, the metabolism of the vitreous, the functional pathology of glaucoma and recently on retrolental fibroplasias; and he is now actively promoting work on radiation injury and trachoma. He is the author of the leading textbook of ophthalmology and monographs on vitreous refraction, etc.
