TitleTownsend, Albert Alan: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for his experimental and analytical contributions to the theory of turbulent motion in fluids. He designed apparatus for studying, and was the first to measure, triple and quadruple correlation which are of crucial importance in theoretical descriptions of isotropic turbulence. He has been particularly successful in finding out how far generalisations such as that of Kolmogoroff, can be justified. He has been a pioneer in the studying of properties of turbulence in shearing flow and has recently published a book on the subject.
