CitationDistinguished for his outstanding contributions to the design and development of aircraft gas turbines from 1942 onwards. He was responsible for the development of the Rolls Royce Welland and for the design and development of the Nene and Derwent series of engines. During the past few years he has been responsible for the later phases of the development of the Bristol Siddeley Proteus turbine propeller engine and for the design and development of the Orpheus and Olympus turbo-jet engines. He has also been closely associated with the successful development of ram-jet type power-plant.
