TitlePenman, Howard Latimer: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDistinguished for notable advances in our knowledge of gaseous diffusion in porous systems, the physics of natural evaporation, and the micro-climate among growing crops. His researches cover soil aeration, the 'availability' of water in soil, the role of leaf stomata in controlling transpiration and assimilation and, as a major contribution, the dependence of potential transpiration on climatic factors. His well-known formula, based on theory and experiment, has found wide application in the fields of catchment hydrology, soil drainage and irrigation practice. His prediction and experimental confirmation of the frequent need for irrigation, even in south and east England, to secure maximum crop yield, has led to a rapid increase of this technique in British agriculture and horticulture
