TitleSugden, Theodore Morris: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationDr. Sugden has made an outstanding contribution to the physical chemistry of flames, with particular reference to free radical reactions, chemiluminescence, and ionisation. New quantitative techniques have been devised for measurement of concentration of radicals, and the results have led to the mechanisms and rate-constants for flame reactions. They have further given an insight into three different kinds of chemiluminescence in flames, and have permitted of the estimation of the dissociation energies of many simple inorganic molecules. The outstanding problems in both equilibrium and non-equilibrium ionisation in flames have been solved by a combination of microwave and mass-spectrometric techniques. All of these advances stem basically from the development of accurate quantitative methods for dealing with systems which have otherwise been treated only qualitatively.
A list of 54 publications is appended, the majority from the Proceedings of the Royal Society A and the Transactions of the Faraday Society.
Dr. Sugden was Vice-President of the Faraday Society from 1961 -1963; Medallist of the International Combustion Institute for an outstanding paper in the field of combustion, 1960.
