TitleBeament, James William Longman: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationM.A., Ph.D., Sc.D. University Lecturer, Department of Zoology, Cambridge. Distinguished for his contributions to the physiology of insects. His work is characterised by a physico-chemical approach to biological problems. HE has contributed much to our detailed knowledge of the insect cuticle and egg shell and, particularly, of the waxy substances responsible for the waterproofing of these structures. He has devised some highly ingenious and original techniques. But he has also discovered important general principles which go far towards explaining the basis of water conservation by small terrestrial organisms.
