TitleBrain, Walter Russell: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationRussell Brain has made a number of original observations in the field of chemical neurology over the first 30 years. He was the first to give an account of the nature of opthalmoplegias and exophthalmos associated with some endocrine disorders. He was the first also to see the causal relationships between cervical intervertebral disc protrusion - "spondylosis"- and chronic diseases on disablement of the spinal cord. He classified the relationship between nerve compression at the wrist (the so called carpal tunnel syndrome) and the acro-paraesthesias. Russell Brain first drew attention to neurological cerebral cerebellar and other degenerations in cancer - the carcinomatous neuripathies caused by metabolic disorders. He made new studies of disturbances of spatial agnosia caused by lesions of the right parietal area and has since made important contributions to the subjects of dysphasia and agnosia. Is Editor of "Brain" and author of several monographs.
