DescriptionCitation typed
CitationGARNHAM, Percy Cyril Claude (London). M.D., D.Sc., D.P.H. Professor of Medical Protozoology and Director of Department of Parasitology, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Distinguished for his researches on parasitic protozoa, especially Haemosporidia. Was involved with colleagues in first demonstration of exoerythrocytic schizogony of malaria parasites in the liver. He extended this study to demonstrate that this was a fundamental stage in the development of all malaria parasites and used it as the basis for a revision of their classification. Garnham's electron microscopic studies on the developmental stages of these and other parasitic protozoa revealed hitherto unknown features, throwing new light on their ultra-structure, which is possibly of systematic importance. His brilliant elucidation of the remarkable life cycle of the simian parasite Hepatocystis (underlined) in Culicoides (underlined) was the culmination of yeats of painstaking research. Earlier he established the role of lymphocytes in immuno-pathology of malaria. Garnham is directing a flourishing postgraduate school, to which many parasitologists owe their training. A list of 126 publications is appended.
