TitleHarley, John Laker: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationMycologist, plant-physiologist. Distinguished for his researches into the physiology of mycorrhiza, and author of the most recent and profound monograph on the subject, "The Biology of Mycorrhiza" (1959). His researches on root-physiology have extended over more than twenty years and have dealt particularly with the uptake of salts, translocation of phosphate, and sugar-phosphate metabolism in the fungal hyphae which have been shown to release inorganic phosphate to the root. These researches are remarkable for originality of thought and approach, for precision in execution, and for breadth of knowledge in many fields. With numerous junior collaborators he has built up a school of mycorrhizal biochemistry which is unique. A list of 36 papers is attached.
