CitationROBERTSON, Alan (Edinburgh). Ph.D. (Cantab) D.Sc. (Edin)
Distinguished for his researches in the two fields of quantitative genetics and animal breeding. In the former has contributed both to the mathematical theory and in particular to the experimental evaluation of its adequacy, and has added considerably to our fundamental knowledge of the origin and behaviour of polygenic variation in animals. In addition he is the leading figure in post-war research on livestock genetics, and has demonstrated the great value of a combination of operational research methods with a sound genetical understanding. Gold Medal, Royal Agricultural Society, 1959.
