CitationDistinguished for his researches into the petrology of the layered basic intrusion and metamorphic rocks of Belhevie and into the Kilchrist region of the Skye volcano; also for his investigations of the petrography and origin of evaporates. He was the first to demonstrate the extensive metastomatism which has affected potash-bearing evaporates. He enjoys an international reputation for his work on the saline deposits, and has recently completed a revision of the section of Clarke's Data of Geochemistry dealing with this subject. In 1952 he received the Mineralogical Society of America Award.
