TitleWalsh, Arthur Donald: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationProfessor Walsh has carried out distinguished work on Experimental Spectroscopy (30 papers), the Theory of Molecular Structure and Spectra (37 papers) and Chemical Kinetics (29 papers). His spectroscopic work has been mainly in the vacuum ultraviolet, but includes also some detailed analyses in the nearer ultraviolet. In 1953 he published a series of papers on the electronic structures and shapes of many simple molecules in their ground and excited states. These have been of great, and increasing, value to all those studying the electronic spectra of small molecules and radicals. He has also done much original work on the gas phase oxidation of hydrocarbons and the effect of surfaces and inhibitors such as lead tetraethyl and on the reaction rates. Professor Walsh's research is characterized by a great breadth of interest and an extremely wide knowledge. He has increased our understanding of many branches of Physical Chemistry.
