CitationDistinguished for his work in applied genetics, he has made outstanding contributions to British agriculture. His use of genetics to advance the principles and procedures of plant breeding has led to greatly improved varieties of crop plants, of which Proctor barley is the most notable. He has also done valuable work on intergeneric hybrids involving Tritcum, Aegilops, Secale and related genera. Under his able direction the Plant Breeding Institute has become one of the world's foremost plant breeding stations, and is acknowledged as among the leading centres of research and training in the genetics of crop plants.
