He has taken a leading part in the measurement of lifetimes of nuclear excited stated with 10 [to the power of] -11 second accuracy; discovery of positronium in condensed substances; systematic study of (p,xn) and (p,pxn) cross sections in heavy elements, showing the latter to be an order of magnitude larger than expected; establishment of the modern value of binding energy of the deuteron; first observation of Doppler broadening of a gamma ray line; wartime development of a microwave scanner used by the Royal Navy.
