TitleGregory, Roderic Alfred: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1960
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his work on the physiology of the gastro-intestinal tract, especially on mechanisms of stimulation and inhibition of secretion and movement, using techniques of experimental surgery. He furnished conclusive proof of the existence of gastrin, and of a similar hormone of intestinal origin. Chemical study of gastrin, urogastrone and enterogastrone led to a preparation of gastrin for human administration. Study of the nervous control of secretion and motility, and of the vagal release of gastrin threw light on the relation between nervous and chemical secretion. Other studies concerned intestinal transport, cardiac metabolism etc.
