TitleJohnson, Alan Woodworth: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
Citation type
CitationDistinguished for his researches in organic chemistry. After early work on the chemistry of acetylenic compounds, which yielded important results, Johnson turned increasingly to the chemistry of natural products. In addition to work on the chemistry of the aphid colouring matters he was jointly responsible for the chemical studies involved in determining the structure of vitamin B12. Independently he has made important contributions to the chemistry of tropolone derivatives, of the actinomycin group of antibiotics and of the natural colouring matter pristimerin. His latest work on the synthesis of porphyrins and related compounds has already yielded results of real significance. A list of publications is appended.
