TitleJones, Reginald Victor: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his work in the field of precise physical measurement, especially the development of the optical lever to an unprecedented degree of perfection. This has enabled him (1) to measure accurately the Brownian fluctuations of a galvanometer mirror; (2) to demonstrate the increase in momentum of photons in a refracting medium; (3) to measure minute linear displacements sufficiently accurately to develop an infra-red thermo-detector which reaches the theoretical limit; (4) to demonstrate that there is no change in the velocity of light in a magnetic field. He made many valuable scientific contributions to the air defence of this country during the 1939 - 1945 war, and his work in scientific intelligence has been acknowledged in several places in Churchill's War Memoirs. He has also made important contributions to the technique of growing large single crystals for studies in nuclear particle detection, paramagnetic resonance and solid state physics. Awarded the Duddell Medal of the Physical Society in 1960.
