CitationDuring his early studies of the action of radiations on chromosomes, he discovered (with J. Read) the effect of oxygen tension on the frequency of induced change, and was among the first to demonstrate differences between between the dose-effect curves of neutrons and X-rays. Turning later to the study of selection he has made important contributions to our understanding of fitness, to the genetics of stability in development, and to the elucidation of the effects of disruptive selection on the conservation of variability, the organisation of polygenic systems and the production of genetically controlled polymorphisms.
