TitleSzwarc, Michael: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to (1) the chemistry of free radicals and (2) anionic polymerisation and the chemistry of radical ions. From studies of radical addition and hydrogen abstraction processes he has amassed a wide range of coherent and accurate experimental data on the basis of which quantitative theories of free radical reactivities have been developed. He developed the toluene carrier gas technique for the study of radical reactions and determination of bond dissociation energies. His work on the initiation of anionic polymerisation by electron transfer to monomer med him to the study of "ling polymers", a term he coined to describe the absence of a termination reaction. This work opened up new avenues in the synthesis of tailored polymers and in the preparation of uniform molecular weight polymers. More recently, he has made rigorous investigations of the rate constants and equilibria for monomer-polymer and monomer-oligomer systems. His work is characterised by its originality and he has opened up exciting new field. A list of 210 papers is appended.
