Title | Phillips, David Chilton: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Well known for his contributions to the most advanced methods of x-ray structure analysis, particularly as applied to the study of globular proteins. With U. Arndt he developed an advanced form of automatic recording apparatus which is now in widespread use. He contributed with Kendrew to the determination of the structure of sperm whale myoglobin, the first protein structure to be analysed in detail. He has led a team of workers in the recent successful determination of the structure of lysozyme, to a precision hitherto unattained in this field. He has also determined the structure of a lysozyme-inhibitor complex showing for the first time in detail the relation between an enzyme and its inhibitor. He made a notable contribution as U.K. co-ordinator in the International Science Hall at the Brussels Exhibition in 1956-58 and in helping to organize the Royal Society Tercentenary Exhibition in 1960. |
