TitleBroadbent, Donald Eric: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationWherever experimental psychology is seriously studied Broadbent's work is known, discussed, admired & frequently used to develop new approaches. He studied noise, its masking properties, its effect upon contemporaneous non-auditory operations, and the processes and course of noise adaptation. This led to experiments on various forms of multi-channel communication, & this again to strikingly original contributions to problems of perceptual "activation". Of his two published books Perception and Communication is an important study of the topics just mentioned & of related matters: Behaviour shows him able to discuss problems that are technical & complex with great clarity & simplicity. Furthermore his direction of the work of the M.R.C. Unit for Research in Applied Psychology has shown that Broadbent possesses leadership qualities of a high order.
