DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his work on rickettaiae and viruses. Discovered the presence of Rickettsia burneti in Britain in cattle, sheep and ticks, relating to cases of Q-fever in man. Contributed greatly to knowledge of the epidemiology of this disease and of the properties of R. burneti. Knowledge of the life cycle of viruses - the eclipse phase, course of development and cell-to-cell spread - owes much to his studies on Herpes simplex.
