TitleWareing, Philip Frank: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationNoted for distinguished work in the fields of morphogenesis and photoperiodism. In his studies of geomorphism, he has been able to correlate quantitative aspects of growth with distribution of growth hormones in which synergistic effects of gibberellins and auxins on cambial activity have been revealed.
The most important recent and current work has shown that long-day treatments induce production of hormones (first termed 'dormins') which affect senescence and abscission. The material purified from L-D sycamore leaves has been characterised as identical with the 'abcisin II' obtained in California. This work on a growth inhibitor of defined physiological function is a major advance. This recognition of identity of dormin with abscisin II was effected by Dr. Cornforth who worked in association with Wareing.
