TitleBorn, Gustav Victor Rudolf: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed. Letter attached to certificate.
CitationDistinguished for his studies of adenine nucleotides, in particular their role in platelet function. He discovered the presence of ATP in high concentration in platelets, and its breakdown to ADP during clotting. Since ADP causes platelet aggregation Born made a thorough study of this phenomenon and its relation to haemostasis and thrombosis, devising a turbidometric method which provided quantitative data on the factors involved. He advanced the idea that ADP causes a configurational change in a platelet protein, and showed that more ADP is formed during aggregation leading to a chain reaction.
