TitleBullerwell, William: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed. Letter attached to certificate.
CitationDistinguished for his application of geophysical methods to the solution of geological problems of the United Kingdom and the surrounding continental shelf. The gravity and aeromagnetic maps of Britain were initiated and supervised by him and he has produced significant interpretations some of which have already been vindicated by subsurface exploration. His synthesis of British gravity data and his tie-up with comparable observations in Continental Europe, especially in Holland, have influenced undersea development. His capable leadership of IGS geophysical teams has enabled them to provide the basis for the search for minerals offshore as well as on land, and to investigate applied aspects of seismology and engineering characteristics of rocks.
