TitleHaddow, Alexander John: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed. Note of place of birth attached to certificate.
CitationHis principal contributions are on mosquito and tabanid ecology as related to zoonoses, notably the demonstration of circadian rhythm in hutentry, biting, swarming, flight and oviposition; observations on vertical distribution and migrations in and above forest. With parallel ecological studies on monkeys and other mammals, including a detailed investigation of Cercopithecus ascanius, this work elucidated the epidemiology of sylvan yellow fever in Africa, Aedes africanus being incriminated as a dangerous vector of this and other virus diseases. Many unknown viruses were also isolated from mosquitoes. Studies on Burkitt's lymphoma revealed that climatic parameters delimit its African distribution, and suggest a mosquito-borne aetiological factor.
