Title | Beverton, Raymond John Heaphy: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Formerly Deputy Director (DCSO) of the Fisheries Laboratory, Lowestoft, where he achieved international distinction for his contributions over 20 years on the modelling of marine fish populations, their natural food supplies and growth, and the effects of fishing on them. "On the Dynamics of Exploited Fish Populations", written jointly with Dr S J Holt, is widely recognised as the major work in this field, contributing not only to commercial fisheries science and regulation, but also to a range of ecological problems, involving prey and predator interaction and conservation over a wide field. Mr Beverton, as Secretary of the Natural Environment Research Council since its inception in 1965, has served the cause of the environmental sciences with great distinction and success. His foresight, leadership, high administrative ability and knowledge of the needs of fundamental and applied science have enabled him to fashion a complex organisation, with a wide range of interests and administrative control, efficiently and in a manner greatly admired by scientists inside and outside NERC. |
