TitleDodd, James Munro: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to the comparative endocrinology, particularly in relation to the organization and functioning of the pituitary complex. His substantial and scholarly reviews have provided valuable clarification in a rapidly expanding field of research, and have suggested homologies and a unified terminology. He and his collaborators have established the nature and extent of pituitary involvement in the reproduction of lampreys and elasmobranches, while their physiological and pharmacological studies have made possible a critical re-assessment of the problem of the relationship between this gland and the ascidian neural complex. Their bioassay techniques for thyroid-stimulating hormone have given important information regarding the biological specificity of this hormone and its distribution in a range of sub-mammalian vertebrates, and have also made possible a quantitative assessment of its role in amphibian metamorphosis.
