CitationDistinguished for the application of the physical and mathematical sciences to the improvement of diagnostic radiotherapy. The fourth MacRobert Award of £25,000 for successful technological innovation was made in 1972 (the first to be presented undivided) to Mr Hounsfield for his 'one-man invention' of the 'EMI-scanner' computerised transverse axial tomography system. This obtains for each of two adjacent tomographic slices of the brain, 8 mm thick, scanned in four minutes without anaesthesia or invasive action, the X-ray absorption coefficient of each of a 80 x 80 matrix of 3 mm squares to 0.5% accuracy: Sufficient to distinguish between liquid blood and blood clots.
